Prof. Wiesław Banyś - scientific specialization: general linguistics and Romance linguistics, in particular: semantic grammar, cognitive linguistics and applied linguistics, computer linguistics, automatic translation. Author of 3 monographs, over 70 scientific articles, scientific editor of the Neophilolologica linguistics journal (20 volumes). The most important scientific achievements, among others, include developing the theory of describing an object-oriented language integrating linguistic semantic hierarchies and concepts of frames and scripts for using, among others, in the implementation of automatic translation.

He completed 13 scientific internships at French universities, in 2004 he was a visiting professor at Université Paris XIII. He is a member of 5 linguistic societies in Poland, France and the United States. He participated in 9 international research grants and 2 international research groups. He was a supervisor of 19 doctoral theses. He held numerous administrative functions, among others 2008 - 2012 and 2012 - 2016 Rector of the University of Silesia, 2008 - 2012 chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Universities, 2012 - 2016 chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland. Since 2015, he has been a member of the Board of the European University Association. President of the Business-Science-Autonomy “Pro Silesia” Association, since 2017. Numerous national and international decorations, including the Order of Polonia Restituta (2011), Order of the Legion of Honour (2014).
